Storing Gardening Equipment For The Winter

by Nevaeh Schmidt

Spring is in the air and sparking the gardening flare in many homeowners. Everywhere you turn, there is a special sale on the equipment you need to garden. How many times have you passed up a good deal on gardening equipment because you don't know what you will do with it all during the off-season? Well, walk past those deals no more – you can store them in a storage unit near your home. Here, you will learn what it takes to prepare your gardening equipment for storage and how to store it all properly, so it will remain in great condition for many years.

Clean the Equipment

In most cases, the only step you have to take to prepare your gardening equipment for storage is to clean it. You don't want to store equipment that is covered with dirt because it could cause the metal to corrode and cause the storage unit to fill with bad odors.

When you get a nice, clear day at the end of the season, pull all of your equipment out and lay it in your yard. Use your garden hose to spray it all down thoroughly. Use a cloth to wipe away any dirt that doesn't come off with the hose.

Allow the equipment to lay out in the sun to dry. You want everything to be as dry as possible before you store it away for the next several months.

Pack the Equipment

For best results, store this heavy equipment in plastic storage bins. Label each bin with its contents, so that you can easily find what you are looking for when next planting season comes around.

Pesticides and other gardening chemicals should be stored separately with tight lids. If you have bags of fertilizer or plant food that are opened, store them each in their own separate plastic containers with tight lids.

Note: Check with the storage facility to learn if pesticides and fertilizers are permitted to be stored on the property. Some facilities don't allow these types of products to be stored.

Pick the Storage Facility

Now that everything is ready to go to storage, find a facility near your home that is easy to access. If you are storing a lot of chemicals and things of the like, find a facility that is climate controlled to keep it all safe over the winter. If you are storing tools only, a storage unit of any type will do fine.

You see, it isn't very hard to find additional space to store all of the things you need to keep your garden looking great. Talk to experts like Rock Solid Storage LLC for more information.
