Three Tips to Help You Keep Your Storage Unit Organized

by Nevaeh Schmidt

When you rent a storage unit and visit it with a truck full of your possessions, it can be tempting to roll up the unit's door and begin filling the available space as quickly as possible. This strategy, however, will only lead to frustration at a later date when you're trying to find something in the unit. Although loading the unit systematically equates to more time spent during this task, the extra care you put into the job will pay dividends down the road when you're able to track down a specific item in a matter of minutes. Here are three tips to help you keep your storage unit effectively organized.

Numbers and a List

Begin the organization process when you start loading boxes to take to your storage unit. Group similar items together and load them in sturdy boxes that you've numbered with masking tape and a permanent marker. Then, on a piece of paper, make a numbered list that corresponds with each box's number. For example, write something such as "Box #1: College textbooks, graduation cap, college photo albums, and school assignments." Keep your list as detailed as possible—it might be tempting to add "misc." to one box's description, but this shortcut won't provide much help in the months ahead when you're looking for a specific item.

Box Location

When you begin to load your storage unit, don't make the mistake of pushing everything against the back wall and moving toward the door until the unit is full. This strategy, while effective at fitting a lot of possessions into the space, will make it difficult for you to navigate through the unit later on. The best strategy is to place your boxes around the perimeter of the unit, leaving a small path, and then pile additional items in the center. This layout will allow you to walk freely in your quest to track down what you're seeking.

Map and Notes

As you load the storage unit, take the time to draw a rough map and make some notes that reveal the location of the boxes. Sketch an overhead view of the unit and draw box shapes with the number of each box included within. Keep your map and notes together with your list of box numbers and contents. Place them in an envelope and keep it in a safe place inside your home, or put the envelope inside one of the boxes in the unit where you can easily remember it but that isn't obvious to a potential thief.
