A Self-Storage Unit Is Useful When You Need To Downsize Temporarily

by Nevaeh Schmidt

Using a self-storage unit is a good way to organize your excess belongings when you need to downsize due to a move. If moving into a smaller apartment or house will be temporary, then you can put your extra belongings in storage so you won't have to buy all new things when you move back into a larger home.

If used properly, your storage unit can seem like an extra-large closet where you can find what you need easily so your things are always available. Here are some tips for using your self-storage unit.

Rent The Smallest Size To Save Money

You'll pay more for larger storage units, so it's a good idea to get rid of excess clutter you don't want or don't need so you don't have to pay to store it. However, keep in mind that if you want your unit to be organized and accessible, you'll need enough room to maneuver and to space your things far enough apart that you can get to them.

Set Up An Organizational System

A storage unit is just a small bare room. You won't be able to put things on the wall, but you can bring in a free-standing organizational unit. If you have one in your closet now, you can transfer it to storage. You can simply bring in adjustable shelves or units with drawers.

The purpose of shelving is to keep your things off the floor, where they might draw dampness or get bugs, and to make things in boxes and totes easily accessible.

Label Everything

It's a good idea to label each box with its contents or at least the room the items came from so it's easy to find something you want. If you're looking for a specific sweater at the change of seasons, you don't want to open every box to find it.

Clear totes are also helpful since you can see the contents without opening the lid. The more organized you are with your self-storage unit, the more useful it will be as a second closet to hold your excess belongings.

Protect Against Bugs, Odors, And Mold

Don't put anything wet in your storage unit or mold may take over. Also, only store clean items so odors don't attract bugs. In addition, you may want to use odor neutralizers to keep your belongings from picking up odors while in storage.

You might want to sprinkle diatomaceous earth around the unit to kill bugs and spiders, but be careful about using anything that would kill mice and allow them to stink up your unit. You may want to check there are no gaps where mice can enter and have the facility plug up any gaps to keep mice and bugs away.
